In 1994, when Paullina Simons’ first book, Tully, was published, I was a clinical social worker, living in Topeka, Kansas, and working in the mental health field. I’d seen a review of the book, and as I was intimately acquainted with the institutions and various locations that provide the backup for this story, I couldn’t wait to read it. [Let me just say, by the way, that anyone from Topeka who’s read Tully has got to be either highly amused or profoundly indignant at the way Simons switched things up—particularly her descriptions of businesses and mental health facilities! If you’re not from Topeka, let me assure you that it’s neither as backwards nor as depressing as described in this book.] What blew me away then—and continues to do so today, more than 20 years later—is the accuracy of Simon’s portrayal of Tully Makker. I’m convinced the author is well acquainted with the real Tully: she’s witnessed (or experienced first-hand) the lasting impact of the kinds of trauma this girl has endured, and understands how this plays out in a survivor’s subsequent behavior, particularly in terms of relationships. And the consuming passion of Tully’s affair with Jack? Wow…..spot on. (You’ve been there, Paullina, right?)

So is Tully Makker a likable character? Is this an easy book to read, or to like? No, no, and no, for the most part. But Tully, both the character and the book, are both realistic and believable. Every time I read this book, I can't help but recall so many physically- and psychologically-scarred survivors of trauma (child abuse/neglect, sexual assault, domestic violence, etc.) I've known through working nearly 30 years in the mental health field. It's an ugly subject, and there are a lot of ugly scenes in this book. But there's also beauty, and strength, and love. It's a story about a lot of things, especially survival, and sometimes it's hard to understand the things people do to survive. Don't read this book if you prefer sweet romance with a happy-ever-after ending, or if you need black-and-white absolutes where good triumphs over evil. And if you're looking for a lovable heroine to cheer on while she overcomes impossible odds, you’re probably going to be disappointed. Tully is not a martyr, and this is not a feel-good book: it's a hard look at a dark side of life most of us would like to deny even exists. I've read this book probably at least a half dozen times, and I've cried, and cursed, and thrown my 1994-vintage paperback across the room more times than I care to admit...which is why I was so delighted to find a Kindle version now available (I guarantee I didn’t throw my iPad across the room when I most recently re-read the book!). I’m horrified by so many of the things Tully does, bemoan so many of her choices—but I love to watch her learn (reluctantly), and grow (slowly), and make those painful changes, baby step by baby step. You may not recognize this as a story of hope and promise...but it is, really.

When I first started reading it, I didn't think it's going to amount to much. But when I finished the whole book, I was overwhelmed with emotion. The book was beyond any expectation! If you have family issues; a love-hate relationship with your mother, for example, this is the book to read. This is a sad but hopeful story. Don't miss out on it!
This is probably the 5th or 6th copy of this book I have had. I gave one to a friend, Lost one on a bus, Gave 1 to my sister. Lord only knows where they have ended up.. but whoever found them would have a lovely book to read. One of my all time favorite books
This is my 5th Paullina Simons book and I have yet to be disappointed. I started her books with The Bronze Horseman series and then The Girl in Times Square, when I came accross Tully I ordered the book and it sat on my bookshelf for a bit before I picked it up. I'm glad I waited for a long weekend to start becuase I could not put it down. This has happend with almost all of Simons books.

Tully is a young woman who has a troubled past and comes from the wrong part of town. Her only lifeline has been her unique friendship with Julie and Jennifer her friends from childhood. But even they don't know everything in Tully's past. As they move throught their Senior Year they struggle to keep their friendship afloat. They deal with relationships, depresssion, anorexia, love, abuse and the expectations of others. Their lives are transformed forever by a tragedy and Tully most know face her biggest fear, being abandoned.

The men Tully meets during her journey to womanhood will all give her what she most desires "LOVE". Robin, Jeremy and Jack all want and love Tully and she wants and loves them all but she must choose.

Paullina Simons characters are flawed and that's what makes you care for them. They all have their own challanges and must over come them. This is not a happily ever after story but it definately is for anyone who has ever had to choose!
I read this book when I was 16 (2003), it was on the shelf in my teacher's classroom and she told me I could keep the book - little did she know, this book was not for a teenager. It's an adult romance, which means it has sex. And a lot of it. It was my first adult romance. It was also the only book I have ever read and cried (probably because "Hold My Hand" by Hootie and the Blowfish was playing during the super upsetting part).

Tully is a loveable character even though she's a bit rough at times. Such as the fact that she can't be with just Robin when Jack walks back into her life. And Jack has a HUGE part of her life.

For a sixteen year old it was captivating; when I read it again - I'm sure I'll be just as captivated. This story will always hold a special place in my heart.
A complicated, moving, heartbreaking story of a strong, complicated woman. Tully was not always a likeable character. She made bad decisions at times, was selfish but I sympathized with her and understood how she came to those decisions. I felt invested in her. At times I felt this book was long but I kept coming back to it. I thought about Tully when I wasn't reading it., which for me is the criteria of a great book. In the end it was so worth it. Tully was a beautiful, ugly, complicated, and moving ride from start to finish and one I will not forget.
