The Blackwell Family Secret The Guardians of Sin Jonathan L Ferrara Books Reviews
Get a load of this Risen Demons, Monsters, Prince of Hell, City of Demonio, action-packed scenes, a trove of secrets, one boy destined to be a hero.
Nicholas isn’t just an ordinary kid. One moment, he was with family, the next thing he knew, he had lost almost everything. Until he uncovered something impossible and intriguing that made his life turned upside down. While he may have lost all his belief in God despite his Catholic upbringing, his faith was soon put to test when he unlocked the Seven Deadly Sins. It is now up to him to overcome, defeat and vanquish the Guardians of Sins and be the man he ought to be. Luckily, Amy, his trusted buddy was there to help and support him, even though he was a jerk most of the times. But there was a reason why Amy was like that. Her true nature was quite a surprise to me and I kinda liked the way she turned out to be.
All in all, this was a fun story brimming with excitement, ridiculousness, danger and suspense. From the beginning, I already saw things were going to move quickly and that was alright with me. The struggles and behavior Nicholas has to go through were apt and suitable to the story, and the other characters, Theodore, Pugdush, Gabriel, they were all valuable to the story. Yup, I’m rather satisfied with the ending of the book, but I can feel it in my bones that there is still more to come for Nicholas, Amy and the author, Jonathan Ferrera. For a debut fantasy novel, this one deserves a thumbs up!
If I am not mistaken this is a first book in the series, through I do not know how the next books will go on. I do have my hypothesis. But let me get back to the story. To be honest I was expecting something different, maybe something like “Sweet Evil” by Wendy Higgins. And throughout the book I had this weird feeling that Nicholas (that’s the protagonist) won the battles too easily. Somewhere in the middle of the book I shouted waking up my small brother. I mean, were those really demons? I don’t know about you, but I’m used to the demons, which do not really care and eat humans. (Book demons, not that I really see them) There was a court, I am serious the demons voted should Nicholas and Amy be killed or continue their journey to defeat the princes of Hell.
Another thing that made me think, “how the hell did that happen?” was the “love” between Nicholas and Amy. I knew something like that was coming, but I never saw a spark between them. I didn’t really get how they fell in love; I can tolerate Nicholas’s like for love, but Amy, really? That just came out of nowhere. It was like “oh, we forgot to add love, let’s make Amy blurt out that she loves Nicholas!” Okay, one last thing and I shut up. I do not know about you, but for me the Blackwell secret was quite simple to figure out. If you read the book carefully you’ll figure it out pretty fast.
Even if I’m saying all that, the book is really great. I mean, the idea that Lucifer fell because of love for a woman, a big plus for the book, but when I read that Gabriel the archangel was easily captured, I was like “huh?! Isn’t he a freaking archangel and wasn’t the Prince of Hell weakened?” Well, that doesn’t really matter now. I believe this book will be very interesting for kids aged 6-15. At that age they will not really ask for what I’m asking, right now. However, if you are looking for something to help blow off your frustration, this is your book. It’s fast paced, has a bunch of mysteries and lots of adventures. I haven’t unraveled all the secrets, so you have a lot to find out for yourself. I promise, it’s going to be fun. And you’ll definitely love one character. Can’t say his name, but he’s the best.
I hope you’ll take this book up to read and will have fun. Enjoy it to its fullest
The Blackwell Family Secret The Guardians of Sin is book 1 in Jonathan L. Ferrara’s YA urban fantasy series. I must say this was a thoroughly enjoyable read, and I can’t wait to read the sequel.
After his parents are killed by a demon, sixteen-year-old Nicholas Blackwell is put under the protection of the Vatican and sent to a boarding school surrounded by a deep forest St. Christopher’s Academy, complete with iron gates, gargoyle statues, and gateposts that leer at him. As his life is in danger, this is the only place where he can be kept safe. One night he ventures into the woods and a serpent tricks him into eating the forbidden fruit, with disastrous consequences–for the Guardians of the Seven Deadly Sins have been unleashed, and now Nicholas must go into the City of Demons and defeat the Princes of Hell, and in the process discover his family secret, one that could change the entire world…A daunting task for a teen, even if he happens to be the school’s cockiest leader of mischief.
I loved the book. Nicholas is a charming protagonist, cleaver, arrogant, yet brave and selfless at times. Ferrara’s world, inspired by Biblical tales, of course, is elaborate and imaginative. I especially loved his focus on the Seven Deadly Sins–what they are, where they came from, etc. Angels and demons are intertwined with fantasy elements, and the whole concept of good and evil is explored.
There’s romance, action, adventure, and mystery. It is also a bit dark at times, which I enjoyed. Ferrara is a talented writer, his prose smooth and his dialogue witty. The pace was excellent and the story kept moving forward with increasing tension until the very satisfying ending that left me hungry for book 2. Recommended!
It's an awesome book. I read it in one day. I couldn't put it down.
