Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris R L Lafevers Yoko Tanaka 9780618927647 Books

Another excellent book purchased on Amazon.com where books of the highest quality can be had at prices to fit any budget.

Theodosia, once again, becomes deeply involved in more than one difficult situation. One ordinary morning she and her parents arrive at the Museum of Legends and Antiqueties to discover a crowd of people including the police. In the foyer there are dozens and dozens of mummies. The police seem to think that Mr. Throckmorten, the curator and Theodosia's father, is somehow involved in the theft of these mommies and taken them there to his museum. Ridiculous, of course.

Theodosia is, of course, drawn into the mystery and becomes bent on proving her father's innocence But to do this she needs free time to explore what has happened. She has to pass many obstacles to pass before she gets to the truth.

Her first obstacle is dealing with grandmother Throckmorten who insists on parading a variety of impossibilty mean goverenesses who are determined to reshape our little sleuth-hound into the child who is never seen and never heard. However, they underestimate Theodosia's talent for diversion directing her teachers attention to other things. This gives her the opportunity to attend to more important matter like keeping in close contact with
Lord Wigmere head of The Brotherhood of the Chosen Keepers. Keeping, not too close, to the evil members of The Serpents of Chaos whose one objective is to create total disorder and confusion in the world at large enabling them to become the ultimate rulers.

As you can see Theodosia is kept very busy and can sometimes be found fashioning amulets to protect herself and those who work in the museum including her parents. Sometimes she feels her parents neglect her to the extreem, but then she she realizes that this neglect is to her best interests. It allowes her to spend hours on end doing her job in the museum which seems to be never ending.

If you have been keeping up with these books you know that Theodosia has some kind of sixth sense that allows her to detect curses, black magic and artifacts that are oozing with evil of all kinds. She has certain tests that are broken down to levels. One is the test with wax which will turn a nasty black-green color if evil is present. Another is to expose objects and artifacts to direct moon-lite.

she has to be constantly on the alert for people following her. Of course, this is almost all the time. However she has her protectors and she has other protectons that are so delicate they are difficult to detect. They are subtle but very strong.

I love these books because they are never dull, there is a lot of comic reliefe and a never ending parade of characters. Strong plots and plenty of sub-plots. There is always a surprise when it comes to whom she can trust and people who are not who they pretend to be. Allies who turn out to be enimies her. This book will keep you on the edge of youf seat. The interest is so deep you don't want to put it down. . At first you may think they are for children. Not at all. I am approaching eighty but my inner child is alive and well. If can persuade your children to read these books they will find los of sophisticated vocabulary but not beyond theit teach. The author has dòne her research into Egyptian history and lore. One comes away after reading that is rich and uplifting.

Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris R L Lafevers Yoko Tanaka 9780618927647 Books Reviews

What a fun and refreshing book. Theodosia is a heroine with a wry sense of humor and an unwavering dedication to her secret craft. Very well-crafted book. The writing rolls along, carrying the reader into the world of 19th Century London and Ancient Egypt.
Just as much fun as the first book. Spunky heroine, Egyptian lore, Victorian England, and some surprises. (I did guess the main surprise here, but I'm not usually very good at that.)
I haven't actually read these books, but my daughter got the first one when she was a first grader. My husband would read her a chapter a night, but she couldn't stand the suspense of what would happen, so she'd start reading ahead on her own. In other words, these are great books to encourage children to read (and gain vocabulary).
The book arrived very soon after placing the order... The book is just like new... We end up paying less than what the book would have cost purchased new or at the bookstore and that even includes shipping & handling... My 13 year old daughter is happy camper, she loves this book series )
For children in Middle School, Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris, and all the Theodosia books by R.L. LaFevers, are great adventures in mysteries and magic and secret organizations and fun to read. It 1907 and Theodosia has learned to remove bad spells and spirits from the artifacts that her parents have brought home from Egypt to their museum. She is the only one in her family that can feel the ancient curses and must keep her abilities secret from her doubting parents, pestering little brother and formidable grandmother. When Theodosia discovers the Staff of Osiris among the artifacts, she must keep it out of the hands of the Serpents of Chaos. It it best to read the books in order, although, they can stand alone.
Theodosia lives in London, 1906, and spends a lot of her time in a museum where her parents are curators. She uses her time well, studying ancient Egyptian, Greek and Latin so she can learn about the artifacts in the museum. She has a few skills her parents do not, namely being sensitive to the magic and spells associated with the artifacts in the museum. Because of this, she is often involved in very exciting events.
The Staff of Osiris is the second in a series, currently of four books about Theodosia, written for children from fourth to sixth grade, but her antics are certainly entertaining for adults too. The author uses a lot of Britishisms, which need explanation for younger American children, but the story is captivating, making the reader want to read them all.
I LOVE these books. I realize they are for pre/teens, but I'm 45 and love Theodosia. She's so spunky and funny. The Egypt theme is different and fun; I even learn a bit by reading them. After reading the Harry Potter and Hunger Game series, it's nice to read a light, entertaining story without characters dieing. (Though it is sad how Theodosia's parents ignore her---it's borderline abuse.) I believe Staff of Osiris is better than the first book, Serpents of Chaos. My only complaint is I read the Serpents about a year ago and felt like I had to re-read the book before I read Staff. In fact, I looked up the Serpents on Wikipedia to get a review. R. L. LaFevers needs to do better with the review--maybe even have a page or two reviewing the previous book(s) to get the reader up-to-speed. While LaFevers is at it, a list of characters at the front of the book would be nice too. I couldn't remember all the characters from the first book and what part they played. (Thank goodness for Wiki) It's time for the Theodosia movies.
