The Helicopter Pilot is an exciting book that I really found myself immersed in from early on as I began reading. I found Edward to be a likeable and convincing character and had enough about him that I genuinely cared what would happen. The writing is well-rounded and of a pretty high standard, beyond what I had initially expected. I wouldn’t say I absolutely loved this, but I found it an enjoyable read that I would probably recommend to others.
Great book, entertaining, fun. I've been a helicopter pilot on the international scene the last 25 years. I feel like I'm right there living all the emotions. If you know someone who dreams of becoming a helo pilot, this book contains more important information than the flight school provides! Don't dare thinking it's too far fetched. Is the helicopter pilot's life a novel? Hell yes!
Beyond reading, travel is the only way to truly learn of other cultures, and to have first-hand, unique experiences. Such is the case with Edward, the main character in The Helicopter Pilot by Darcy Hoover. Edward, a helicopter pilot arrives in East Africa, there to do a rather mundane job, shuttling people back and forth, but soon finds himself immersed in a new culture. Not only does this book showcase Edward's timidity, it also brings up racism in the region, and how that affects the culture. While there seems to be no strong plot, and no real sense of tension in this book, it merely follows Edward around, there is a sense that this main characters grows into his role, while relinquishing some of his rule-bound life. For that reason, this is an illuminating, if not entirely exciting read. Strong recommendation for a book that will teach you about a very different culture and society.
What a great story about pushing your own limits! Pushing to become who you want to be, while stepping out of what is comfortable and familiar is a powerful theme in this story. Hoover does an amazing job of writing the nervous conflict and dynamics of her main character, Edward.

There are a few other great characters, each with their own particular struggle and challenge they’ve overcome, but Edward is by far the strongest of the bunch, and he fights to move forward despite pretty much being so far out of his element you’d think he would break.

Hoover does a great job of taking real places and seemingly real people and dropping them into situations that feel surreal but plausible. With that being said, the plot could have been a bit stronger, but it’s nothing that would make the story unbearable. This story is great, and anyone who loves fiction and dynamic characters should enjoy this read.
