Kiss an Angel Susan Elizabeth Phillips 9780380782338 Books

Many years ago I picked up Kiss an Angel to read. I had never read a book by Susan Elizabeth Phillips but the premise this book was based on was intriguing. From the first page I was hooked! I loved the setting (a society girl forced to marry a circus manager) and the characters. Well, not Daisy's father and stepmother who were manipulative and scheming. This is a book that I re-read often. It makes me laugh and cry, and has a happily ever after ending. My husband and I lost our daughter (our only child) to cystic fibrosis many years ago so the Christmas season is a sad time. I read this book each year to remind me that the shadows of sadness do recede and happiness returns. I have since read most of SEP's books and have never been disappointed.

Kiss an Angel Susan Elizabeth Phillips 9780380782338 Books Reviews

Don't be deterred by the negative reviews. If You enjoy suspending reality to be entertained by the magic of words crafted by a master - this is a book for you.
SEP writes about flawed people with broken hearts mended by the courage to trust again.
This is a reread in a digital format and after all these years it's still
Delicious!
I loved this book, it was both sweet and infuriating, the characters were relatable and the storyline flowed really well. Daisy was adorable and I only sometimes wanted to throw something at her and make her pay attention, and Alex, this guy I wanted to slap silly but the more I got to know him, the more I understood why he does the things he does. All in all, the whole thing was great and I’m happy to have been part of it
I am in the middle of a re-read of my books and this is the fifth SEP I am on. Most of SEP's heroines are fairly independent, have some self-respect and a modern outlook. Not so Daisy the heroine of this story. I guess SEP is trying to set a sufficiently low bar for the heroine so that she can "grow" during the course of the story. So Daisy is portrayed as a totally naive ditz, vain and weak. She is 26, has been tethered to her mom (international playgirl) her entire life, has no skills and has never worked in her life. She gets herself in debt she goes on a spending spree when mom dies even though there is no money to spend. She also has a strange world view she won't swear (makes others apologize if they swear in her presence), she only contemplates sex in a marriage and she says her marriage vows are sacred (because she said it to God) and wants to work on her marriage except she was blackmailed into it with someone she had known all of 3 days and which she knows will terminate in 6 months. She also smokes. SEP tells us Daisy is afraid of animals and so what happens, when she is accused of stealing money from the circus (which she didn't but she gave in to the accusation) her jerk husband sentences her to do grunt work with the circus animals. I think you get the picture SEP is trying to draw here. The hero is the same except at the other end of the spectrum - there is a difference between an alpha male and a jerk.

The first sex scene is awkward and not romantic, with Daisy trying to pretend she is experienced when in fact she is a virgin. The scenes with the circus animals seem pretty contrived and unrealistic.

Many of SEP’s books have LOL moments but unfortunately not this. Even the scene where Alex is trying to train Daisy in a circus act and she keeps screaming is not much fun at all.

None of the secondary characters (Heather, Sheba, Brady) are endearing enough to be interesting.

The second half of the book wallowed in melodrama.

The version had a number of typos.
Daisy's father forces her to marry Alex, to teach her how to be an adult, because she is broke and wants to please her father she agrees. Alex is paying back debts so he also agrees to marry Daisy for only 6 months. Daisy was not allowed to grow and be independent due to her mother's insecurities, so Daisy doesn't really know how to be an adult living alone. Alex is traveling with the circus, has a low opinion of Daisy and plans to make things hard for her. I loved the slow and realistic build up to their love. Two different people, who don't know anything about each other learning how to get along and trust each other. Their conversations made me smile and I was truly disappointed in Alex when he believed the worst of Daisy. I enjoyed the secondary characters and the tempestuous relationship between Sheba and Brady. I loved everything about this book.
My favorite book for 2018 and I wish I could give it more stars! The forced marriage trope is, by far, my guiltiest pleasure, but it has to be done just right, in order for it to work. I loved Daisy; she was not only smart and sweet, but kind as well. I loved watching her grow; she developed such a deep strength and the quirky way she handled Alex was so true to her character. Which leads me to our leading man, Alex. As a boy, he suffered greatly from a violent and abusive uncle and as such, believed himself incapable of feeling love. I'll be honest, there were times he was so cold to Daisy that my heart hurt for her. However, slow!y but surely we got to see Daisy get under his skin and begin to defrost that frozen heart of his. This was a man with a lot of pride who didn't divulge any personal info about himself to Daisy, nor did he go quickly or quietly. I don't want to give too much away, I think it's best just to jump in and let the story unfold; but rest assured, there's a great grovel scene that will warm your heart. In the spirit of being honest, there is a certain situation where you'll have to momentarily suspend your belief and a!low the author some latitude but it's endearing and falls in line with the character's good hearted nature. I was completely and totally captivated from beginning to end.
